2025 Chevrolet Camaro: Specs, Interior, Price & Release Date

The Z28 series started as an effort to become street legal but now that the streets are electrifying it’s almost illegal to have a gas guzzling car by 2025. That’s why the 2025 Chevy Camaro Z28 will be the last of its kind and will go down in history as one of the most iconic cars in American Automotive History. But lucky for us, the last ride of this series is the 7th generation Camaro Z28, which is rumored to be the best of them all.

In this post, we’re taking you through the history of the car and how Chevrolet is planning something huge with the 2025 Chevy Camaro Z28. And if the rumors aren’t enough, we have ourselves a rumored look inside the Camaro interior made by GM designs. So be sure to stay till the end to see for yourself.

History of Chevrolet Camaro

The Z28 nameplate is etched into the pages of Automotive History as one of the most revered and respected performance packages ever to be offered.

Its Origins can be traced back to December 1966 when GM produced a special performance package for the Chevy Camaro under the simple code name Z28. The goal was simple: to challenge the Ford Mustang in all aspects and to compete with it in the recently created Trans Am series by the Sports Car Club of America.

However, the SCCA had strict rules and no GM engine was available that fit the category. They were either too large, over 305 cubic inches, or too underpowered, six cylinders, to compete.

Chevrolet needed a street legal, race-ready performance car that could meet SCCA’s strict rules, so they took note of what many street racers were already doing, and thus the first Z28 hit the streets.

The 1968 and 1969 Camaro Z28s boasted a larger hood with forced air induction options, front disc brakes behind a 15-inch Corvette wheel package, and suspension upgrades including front coil springs and a more rigid rear multi-leaf spring setup. It dominated both the drag strip and the road track circuits.

Then came the second generation Z28s, which were equipped with a 350 cubic inch engine that delivered a staggering 360 horsepower.

Chevrolet also offered the new Z28 with a three-speed turbo automatic transmission for the first time. Sales were at an all-time high, but with rising gas prices, shortages, and new federal safety and emissions regulations to comply with, the Z28 package was discontinued in 1974. However, Chevrolet revived the Z28 in mid-1977 in response to Pontiac’s success with their Firebird line.

The new Z28 was not as powerful as its predecessor, with the 350 cubic inch engine delivering a meager 185 horsepower, even less if you lived in California and were subject to the restrictive emissions laws. Nonetheless, buyers could still get respectable performance options that made the revived Z28 a fun car to drive.

The third generation of Camaro made its debut in 1982, and the Z28 was awarded Motor Trend’s Car of the Year. It was fitted with a 5-liter 4-barrel engine, and buyers could also opt for the LU5 twin Crossfire injection system for added power. The new Z’s powertrain was sheltered under fiberglass and functional air induction.

The fourth generation, which began in 1993, was a time of transformation for the Camaro. Equipped with an LT1 V8, it boasted 225 horsepower. But by 1997, sales had significantly dropped off.

The attempt at a cross between American and European style wasn’t popular with the American consumer, and GM discontinued production of the Camaro line in 2002.

For eight long years, Camaro enthusiasts waited in anticipation for the return of their beloved muscle car. Finally, in 2010, the 5th generation Camaro was unveiled, and it was a complete departure from the previous generation with a semi-retro style.
