As Rivian gears up for the release of its R2 compact SUV slated for 2026, the electric vehicle manufacturer is actively soliciting feedback from its reservation holders to fine-tune the vehicle’s specifications and design.

In a recent survey distributed to these future owners, Rivian sought insights on various configurations including battery size, motor type, and the positioning of the charging port.

The survey comes on the heels of Rivian’s public unveiling of the R2 at an event in Laguna Beach. While the prototype displayed bore the hallmarks of a nearly final design with features like innovative Halo Rollers on the steering wheel, it was clear that the underlying mechanics were still subject to change.

The prototype, based on a modified R1 platform, indicated significant developments yet to be implemented in the production model.

In an effort to align the R2’s features with consumer preferences, Rivian’s survey focused on pivotal aspects that will define the user experience and functionality of the vehicle.

One notable area of inquiry was the charge port location, a topic of some contention among electric vehicle users. The survey pointed out that the prototype features a rear-right charge port, aligning with existing Rivian models, and queried reservation holders about their preferred port locations, including options that would facilitate easier access at charging stations.

Further, the survey presented a range of potential motor and battery configurations, asking participants to weigh in on their preferences for aspects such as range, acceleration, and pricing. Notable configurations put forth for evaluation included:

• A tri-motor AWD system with a 300-mile range, capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in just 2.5 seconds, expected to be priced between $65-69k.
• A dual-motor AWD setup offering a 350-mile range, with a 3.5-second 0-60 mph time, and priced at $53-57k.
• Economical single-motor RWD options that provide substantial range and moderate acceleration at a more accessible price point.

The feedback gathered from this survey is poised to play a crucial role in the finalization of the R2’s design and features.

By engaging directly with its reservation holders, Rivian is not only ensuring that the R2 meets the real-world needs and preferences of its future drivers but is also fostering a sense of community and involvement among its customer base.
