At the 2024 New York Auto Show, Nissan made exciting announcements about the future of its iconic GT-R and Z cars.

Ponz Pandikuthira, Nissan’s Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer for North America, assured everyone that the GT-R and Z won’t be going away. He said the current GT-R, known as the R35, is getting special editions but will stop production soon. However, the next GT-R will still be a beast on the racetrack.

Pandikuthira mentioned they’re looking into new technology, including stuff they learn from electric car races. He also said the new GT-R will keep its mean look and awesome performance.

Alfonso Albaisa, Senior Vice President of Nissan, provided further insights into the future of the GT-R, hinting at a bold design direction that retains the hallmark characteristics of the legendary nameplate. “Godzilla needs to be an ugly car, menacing car,” Albaisa remarked, suggesting that the forthcoming GT-R will continue to strike fear into the hearts of competitors.

Pandikuthira hinted that the next Z could either honor the heritage of classic models like the 240Z or introduce a completely new and innovative design. Albaisa supported this idea, saying that the next Z must either respect its history or redefine the sports car world with a fresh approach. He stressed that there won’t be a middle ground in the decision.
