2025 Subaru Outback: Engine & Powertrain

The 2025 Subaru Outback offers two engine choices to suit different driving needs.

First up is the standard engine, a 2.5-liter one, giving you 182 horsepower. It’s great for everyday driving, striking a good balance between power and fuel efficiency.

This engine comes with a Continuously Variable Automatic Transmission (CVT), which smoothly shifts gears to give you a nice, easy ride.

Now, if you’re looking for a bit more oomph, there’s the option to go for the turbocharged engine, a 2.4-liter one. It bumps the horsepower up to 260, giving you more zip when you hit the gas.

It’s perfect for when you need that extra punch for passing or tackling tougher roads. Like the standard engine, it also comes with a CVT for smooth driving.

Both engines come with Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, which helps you stay in control, no matter the road conditions. And they both offer good ground clearance, so you can handle bumpy roads and rough terrain without a hitch.

2025 Subaru Outback – Performance & Fuel MPG

When it comes to going fast, the 2025 Subaru Outback offers different speeds depending on the engine. We tested two versions.

One had a turbocharged engine with 260 horsepower. It zoomed from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds. That’s pretty quick and great for passing cars on the highway.

The other had a standard engine with 182 horsepower. It took a bit longer, 8.5 seconds, to reach 60 mph. It’s not as fast, but it’s okay for regular driving.

Now, let’s talk gas mileage. The Outback with the regular engine gets about 26 miles per gallon in the city and 33 on the highway. But if you pick the turbocharged one, it’s a little less efficient, getting around 23 mpg in the city and 30 on the highway.

In our real-world test, both engines did about the same, averaging 28 mpg on a long highway trip. So, they’re pretty close in how much gas they use.

Cargo Space

Cargo Space
Cargo Space

When it comes to interior space, the 2025 Subaru Outback stands out among its competitors. With 42.8 inches of front legroom and 39.5 inches in the rear, it offers ample space for passengers to stretch out and stay comfortable on long drives.

In comparison, the Chevrolet Blazer falls slightly short with 41.0 inches of front legroom and 39.6 inches in the rear, while the Honda Passport matches the Outback’s rear legroom but lags slightly behind in the front with 40.9 inches.

But where the Outback truly shines is in cargo capacity. With 32.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, expandable to a generous 75.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down, the Outback outpaces both the Chevrolet Blazer and Honda Passport.

The Blazer offers 30.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats, which extends to 64.2 cubic feet with the seats folded, while the Passport provides 41.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 77.9 cubic feet with the seats down.

2025 Subaru Outback Release Date

The expected release date for the 2025 Subaru Outback is around September to October 2024, according to trusted sources.

Final Thoughts

The 2025 Subaru Outback is still a top choice, especially for outdoor lovers. It offers a comfy ride and lots of space inside.

While its safety alerts can be a bit much, we like the added safety features. You can toughen it up with options like a roof rack and water-resistant seats.

But keep in mind, the Outback’s look hasn’t changed much, and its base engine feels weak. Both engines can be rough at idle, and we wish Subaru used more physical buttons instead of relying on the touchscreen. Still, we think the Outback will stay popular in 2025.
