Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to reveal the electric version of its famous G-Class at the 2024 Beijing auto show. The electric G-Class, called the G 580 with EQ Technology, will be showcased on April 24 and officially introduced the next day.
The idea of an electric G-Class was first mentioned by CEO Ola Källenius in 2019. Despite considering discontinuing the G-Class, Mercedes decided to electrify it instead, acknowledging its iconic status.
While specific details about the electric G-Class are yet to be disclosed, it’s anticipated to have impressive off-road capabilities, including a unique feature called a ‘tank turn’ for tight maneuvers on trails.
The electric G-Class will likely retain the rugged body-on-frame platform of its predecessor, the EQG concept, along with electric motors powering each wheel independently. It’s expected to match the performance of the regular G-Class, including tackling steep slopes.
Although Mercedes hasn’t revealed the range of the electric G-Class, it’s hinted at using advanced battery technology to improve energy density.
While there’s no confirmation on when the electric G-Class will be available in the U.S., it’s speculated to arrive alongside the updated 2025 G-Class range. Mercedes has confirmed that petrol-powered versions of the 2025 G-Class will hit U.S. showrooms later in the year.
Aside from the electric G-Class, Mercedes will also unveil other electrified models at the Beijing auto show, including the high-performance AMG GT 63 S E Performance plug-in hybrid sports car, upgrades for the EQS, and a new offering from Maybach.
