Hey guys, today our team was in Detroit taking a look at the 2025 Ford Maverick. They’ve made some pretty substantial changes for this model year, even though the Maverick is not that old, and that’s because it’s selling incredibly well. Last year, they sold nearly 100,000 Mavericks, and not too surprisingly, almost half of them were hybrids. So let’s take a look and see what they’ve changed for 2025 and talk about the big change to the hybrid. we will tell you in advance: it’s all-wheel drive.
Exterior Update
The 2025 Maverick sports some noticeable exterior changes, particularly in the front. In the Lariat trim, the updated headlight design features a projector LED with an incandescent turn signal and an LED light pipe.
The grille is bigger and bolder, complemented by a different lower grille treatment. For those opting for the XLT trim, you’ll find base headlights that are LED reflectors instead of projectors. The whole module has a slimmer, more aggressive look, which I believe works better with this headlight design.
Tremor Trim
Meet the new Tremor trim, which has now become a standalone trim rather than just a package. This trim boasts distinctive gold accents, including recovery hooks and a revised lower bumper to improve the approach angle. The Tremor also features the same projector headlights as the upper trims.
Moving to the back, the updated taillights have a light pipe in the top-end versions, adding some nice architectural details to the headlight itself.
Size and Design
The Maverick’s size remains unchanged for 2025, maintaining its right-sized appeal for many Americans. Although it’s marketed as a compact truck, it’s still larger than the small trucks of the 1980s.
At around 200 inches long, the Maverick might not be a “truly small truck” by some standards, but it fits well within the modern market. The XLT with the FX4 off-road package showcases the design harmony Ford has achieved while reserving some premium features for the higher-end trims.
Tailgate and Cargo Bed
The tailgate of the Maverick continues to offer adjustable tethers, allowing it to be fully or partially down, aligning with the cargo bed. The bed size is a compromise, given the Maverick’s mission to be a versatile vehicle similar to a Ford Escape with a pickup truck bed. This means the passenger compartment is relatively spacious, though the bed is smaller compared to a Ranger or an F-150.
Powertrain Options
For 2025, the Maverick offers two engine options, one of which is a new fourth-generation Ford hybrid system with 191 horsepower. The 2.5L engine and the new transmission, a Ford planetary power-split-style, provide better efficiency and improved fuel economy.
The big news is the addition of all-wheel drive to the hybrid model. This system not only enhances traction but also increases towing capacity to 4,000 lbs, matching that of the 2.0L turbocharged model. This means you no longer have to choose between fuel efficiency and towing capability.
If you prefer more power, the 2.0L turbocharged engine with 238 horsepower is still available, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Interior Design
The interior of the Maverick remains a standout feature, with Ford using various material choices and unique textures to dress up the relatively inexpensive cabin.
The fabric in this model, for example, isn’t just monochromatic gray but includes blue and white threads that add visual interest. The door panels also feature unique patterns and textures, with plenty of hard plastics, as expected in a vehicle designed to start around $20,000. The blue inserts in this trim add a nice touch.
Dashboard and Technology
One of the most noticeable changes for 2025 is the significantly larger screen on the dashboard, approximately 13 inches, which includes infotainment and climate controls. This setup supports wireless smartphone projection, perfect for fans of wireless Android Auto.
The dashboard also features more blue accents and large air vents, enhancing the aesthetic appeal. The rotary shifter, big cup holders, and blue accents continue down the center console. The driver’s side includes an 8-inch partial LCD instrument cluster with LED gauges for engine temperature and fuel level.
Lariat Trim
In the Lariat trim, you’ll notice different accent colors and textures, such as brown-orange accents and a different texture on the trim panel. The rust-colored accents on the doors and the navy blue section on the center console create a visually appealing palette.
The Lariat trim also includes Ford’s Pro Trailer Backup Assist software, which simplifies trailer backing and includes a Trailer Hitch-Up Assist function for less experienced drivers.
Interior Accents
The interior of the Lariat trim is more muted, lacking some of the bronze accents found in other models. However, it still features a unique color palette with navy blue sections and coordinating stitching, creating a cohesive and attractive look.
Driver Assistance Systems
For 2025, every Maverick comes standard with lane-keeping assist, in addition to the autonomous emergency braking that was standard last year. Optional features include blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control.
Ordering for the 2025 Maverick will be available soon, with prices starting at $26,295 for the hybrid drivetrain. Ford continues to position the hybrid as the standard drivetrain, keeping prices competitive.
My Final Thoughts
The 2025 Ford Maverick remains one of the least expensive hybrids available in North America, with impressive fuel economy ranging from 40 to 42 MPG. It’s a compelling option if you’re shopping for a hybrid compact crossover, offering the added practicality of a bed in the back.
Although you sacrifice some interior space compared to a Ford Escape, RAV4, or CRV, the Maverick’s bed provides significant utility. The bed may be the smallest in its segment, but it’s incredibly practical for those looking for a compact hybrid truck. The addition of all-wheel drive to the hybrid model makes the Maverick more competitive than ever.
Let me know your thoughts in the comments. Are you excited about the all-wheel-drive hybrid? Would you choose the hybrid or the 2.0L turbo engine? Personally, we would go for the hybrid drivetrain with all-wheel drive, but the 2.0L turbo offers fantastic performance.
