Rivian, the electric vehicle (EV) innovator, unveiled its latest model, the R2, this week. Positioned as a smaller and more budget-friendly option than its predecessors, the R2 follows the success of Rivian’s R1T pickup and R1S SUV.

During the reveal, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe highlighted the company’s commitment to safety, emphasizing the achievements of the R1T and R1S. The R2, with a starting price of $45,000, is designed to appeal to those seeking an affordable yet adventurous electric SUV experience.

The R2’s interior features include flexible folding seats, two gloveboxes, and separately opening rear windows for improved ventilation. Built on a new platform, the R2 boasts a shorter wheelbase and will be available in single-motor rear-wheel-drive, dual-motor, and tri-motor configurations.

The tri-motor setup promises impressive acceleration, with a 0-to-60 mph sprint in “well under 3 seconds.” While specific horsepower and range details weren’t provided, Scaringe assured that all configurations offer over 300 miles of range.

Tech enthusiasts will appreciate the R2’s SAE Level 3 automation, enabled by 11 cameras and 5 radars. This allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel and eyes off the road, representing a significant leap in automation capabilities.

Scaringe referred to the system as “self-driving,” similar to Tesla’s Level 2 systems, although it’s believed to offer Level 3 capabilities. The implementation of these features will depend on state regulations.

Interested buyers can reserve the R2 starting today, with deliveries expected in the first half of 2026. Manufacturing will take place in Normal, Illinois, utilizing existing production capabilities. Rivian is also gearing up for a second factory in Georgia to produce additional models.
