Driving the 2025 Mazda CX-70 PHEV: An Enthusiast’s Review

What’s up, guys! My name is Andrew, and today I’m thrilled to share my driving experience with the 2025 Mazda CX-70 plug-in hybrid Premium Plus.

First Impressions

The Mazda CX-70 is being marketed as an all-new vehicle, but it’s essentially a rebranded name in the Mazda lineup. However, that doesn’t diminish the excitement of experiencing a fresh model from a brand I love.

The CX-70 is a bit lighter than its three-row sibling, the CX-90, which positively impacts its driving dynamics. The lighter weight makes the plug-in hybrid setup feel more responsive and enjoyable to drive.

Powertrain and Performance

The CX-70 offers two drivetrain options: the plug-in hybrid with a 4-cylinder engine and a turbocharged 6-cylinder pulled from the CX-90. While I wasn’t a huge fan of the plug-in hybrid in the CX-90, the lighter CX-70 makes better use of this setup. You can even drive in electric mode for a few miles, which is more practical in a two-row vehicle.

Both the CX-70 and CX-90 feature an 8-speed automatic transmission, currently unique to these models in Mazda’s lineup. I found the transmission shifts smoothly with no complaints.

Additionally, the CX-70 comes with all-wheel drive, as do most Mazdas, providing confidence in various driving conditions.

Driving Experience

Mazda has always prioritized driving feel, and the CX-70 is no exception. It handles well, with firm steering that delivers plenty of road feedback.

While this might compromise a bit on luxury, it offers a driving experience that true enthusiasts will appreciate. For those looking for a more luxurious ride, it’s essential to take it for a test drive to see if it meets your comfort expectations.

Interior and Features

Stepping inside, the CX-70 greets you with a fully digital gauge cluster that’s both attractive and easy to read. The customizable gauge lets you cycle through various options, adding a personal touch to your driving experience.

The steering wheel is equipped with volume, skip track, and information buttons on the left, and adaptive cruise control and steering assist on the right.

The center console houses the infotainment system, complete with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This system is consistent with what you’ll find in the CX-90, including a 360-degree camera in the Premium Plus trim.

The climate controls are straightforward, although I wish the temperature buttons were a bit more intuitive. Nevertheless, the heated and ventilated seats, along with a heated steering wheel, are fantastic features.

Comfort and Practicality

The seats in the CX-70 are finished in a striking red, contributing to a stylish interior. There’s plenty of room in the back seat, making it a significant upgrade over the CX-5 and CX-50 in terms of passenger space.

For those over 6 feet tall, I recommend trying out the seats at your local dealer to ensure they meet your comfort needs.

In the back, the CX-70 offers ample cargo space, especially since it doesn’t have a third row. You’ll find practical touches like a power-operated tailgate, multiple outlets, and power-folding seats, making it versatile for various needs.

Exterior Design

The CX-70 features Mazda’s Kodo design language, which I find appealing. While it’s not a radical departure from the CX-90, the subtle changes to the front and rear bumpers give it a distinct look. It strikes a balance between being stylish and practical, fitting well within Mazda’s SUV lineup.

Final Thoughts

Driving the 2025 Mazda CX-70 was a delightful experience. I love Mazda’s interior design and how their vehicles drive. The plug-in hybrid system in the CX-70 is efficient, making it a great choice for short-distance drivers. The rear seat space and overall comfort are impressive, making it a solid option for those needing a bit more room than the CX-5 or CX-50 offer.

However, I have mixed feelings about Mazda’s marketing strategy. The CX-70 is essentially a two-row version of the CX-90, and the minimal changes feel somewhat misleading. It feels like Mazda tried to repurpose an existing model without offering substantial new features, which might leave some buyers feeling a bit short-changed.

Despite these marketing quirks, the Mazda CX-70 is a great vehicle. If you can look past the rebranding, you’ll find a well-designed, enjoyable SUV.

I hope you enjoyed this review. Don’t forget to rate, comment if you liked it. Take care, guys!
