- BYD unveils Ocean M hot hatch concept at Beijing Auto Show
- Expected to rival MG4 and VW ID.3
- Production version slated for release in China this summer
- Features sporty design elements with potential rear-wheel-drive configuration
BYD is expanding its electric vehicle lineup with the flashy Ocean M hot hatch concept, showcased at the Beijing Auto Show.
This concept car hints at a production model set to hit the Chinese market later this summer. While the concept’s wild design might not carry over to the production version, it gives us a taste of BYD’s plans in the compact EV scene.
Set to take on rivals like the MG4 and Volkswagen ID.3, the Ocean M promises to be about the size of a Corolla. Even without all the flashy extras, the production version will likely turn heads with its sleek look, taking cues from sporty cars like the Lamborghini Aventador. Features like camera-based mirrors and smooth door handles add to its modern vibe.
Sitting between BYD’s Dolphin and Seal models, the Ocean M represents BYD’s latest electric tech. Rumors suggest there might even be a rear-wheel-drive version, which is rare for EVs. While we don’t know exact power details yet, it could offer a fun driving experience like VW’s ID.3.
BYD says the Ocean M will be competitively priced, expected to range from $20,700 to $27,600. While it might not come to the U.S. anytime soon, its hatchback design suggests it could be headed for Europe, where small EVs are popular.
