For many of us, the Mazda RX7 has always been a dream car. Growing up, it was a symbol of innovation and performance, especially with its unique rotary engine. While the Mazda MX30, introduced as an electric vehicle, featured a rotary engine used solely for generating electricity, it didn’t quite meet our hopes for a rotary-powered sports car.
However, it seems that Mazda is on track to deliver exactly that with the new RX7. Expected to return in 2026 or possibly 2027, the RX7 promises to be more than just a nod to the past—it might actually bring back the thrill of driving a rotary engine sports car.
Potential Specifications
So, what can we expect from this new RX7? According to Best Car Magazine, the vehicle might be launched in 2026 or early 2027. While initial speculation suggested a fully electric car with a rotary engine as a generator, new information indicates that the RX7 might feature a gas-powered rotary engine. This engine would potentially be supported by electric motors, functioning as a mild hybrid system with a 48-volt setup.
Imagine a setup where the car could use electric motors for low-speed driving and switch to the rotary engine for more powerful acceleration. There’s even talk of the RX7 being able to run solely on electric power in certain situations, which would be perfect for quiet, low-speed driving.
The rotary engine would kick in for more spirited driving or when extra power is needed. This blend of technologies could offer a unique driving experience, combining the benefits of both electric and rotary power.
Design and Pricing
In terms of design, the new RX7 is expected to closely resemble the Iconic SP concept that wowed attendees at the Japan Mobility Show. Pricing is projected to be around $35,000 to $40,000 USD, which, if accurate, would make the RX7 a more affordable option compared to some of its competitors. For instance, the Toyota MR2, also anticipated to return around the same time, is expected to be priced much higher, potentially between $70,000 and $80,000 USD.
